Hi All,
I've just started methotrexate, on my 2nd week now. As a teenager and all thought my teenage years I've always suffered with achne, it cleared up quite well and just had the odd spot now and again. Since being on methotrexate I've suffered with achne again, but at the age of 24 it's quite disheartening! has anyone else had any skin problems since being on methotrexate?

 Hi Natalie, I'm on methtrix, haven't suffered with spots (or as my nan used to say pimples). I use facial wipes from waitrose now and again if my face looks greasey. Find them good. How about a home pampering from body shop? Like a mask? There was a product I used to use (must get more) its for spots, a bright green face pack. Truly scrummy minty smell. Have some me time! Hi Natalie - good luck with the MTX - it works really well for me, so keep thinking positive thoughts - I'm convinced that they help to make things go smoothly!!! Shame about the spots - it's so distressing for them to come back after all that time! My girls are suffering at the moment and all I can suggest is to be obsessive about cleaning their skin - they like Clearasil facial cleanser! My hubbie also gets awful outbreaks every so often, and as he's 50+ he can't blame it on hormones!!! He has some antibiotics from the GP (oxytetracyclin) which really clear it up very quickly, so there is extra help if it gets to be serious. I've never had any skin problems as a result of Mtx. Many side effects from drugs are only temporary so give some time for your body to adjust. It might be worth a quick call to someone for advice because maybe you need more folic acid or some kind of vitamin supplement. Mtx is a good drug for some and I hope it works well for you and the skin issues settle down. Do keep us posted on how you're getting on. naomi, XXX

Sorry to hear about the acne and I can sympathise greatly because I have suffered from it all my life. However, it did get worse when I was diagnosed with RA and started Methotrexate.
The methotrexate can make your skin light sensitive and in turn this can give you Rosecea Acne. My RA Consultant sent me to see a dermatologist and she said she has seen quite a few people with returned acne after taking methotrexate and also a lot of ladies who are getting late on set acne.
I now have to protect my skin every day from light by using a factor 50 tinted moisturiser recommended by the Dermatologist which is called Sunsense Dailyface SPF50+ Invisible Tint Finish Suncream. I use this every day come rain or shine. You can get a really good deal on Amazon. It normally retails about £13.00 but goes down to around £9.00 if you commit to buy one every three or six months. If I do not use the suncream, even sitting in doors my face can start to burn.
I was also prescribed long term antibiotics called Tetralysal (lymecycline) 300mgs. I have been taking these for nearly two years now and my skin is the clearest it has ever been.
I would make an appointment at your GP to find out if yours is similar as it is easily treated.
I hope the Methotrexate does start to work for your RA.

Thanks for this post Jackie - I'd never thought about my hubby's spots being light related, but what you say makes loads of sense. He's on a similar antibiotic to you - they are both tetracycline antibiotics. He's never had an actual diagnosis from the GP, but it flares up every so often and the pills clear it up within a day or two. I wonder if I could get him to use a sun screen????? I'd probably have to stand over him like a child, because he's awful at doing those little regular body maintenance things (typical bloke!!!!!). Hi Natalie,I am 69yrs old,also take 20mg mthx along with sulfasalzine & enbrel injection,i have open spot sores on my back & chest,my GP tells me it is my immune system being very low.Somethinou i will have to put up with.If you have them on your face,this is something you should not have to put up,there must be something out there for you.May be a Dermotolagist!!!!

Hello!
Thank you for all your comments, So off I went to the doctors and they prescribed me with some Fucidin H cream. Well it seems to be working at the moment! I've also been using some oil balancing face wash and moisturiser from the simple range. I have to go back to the doctors if it gets any worse.
I'm now on week 3 of mtx, I've not felt any better yet, but hoping I will after a few more weeks. Just been feeling very sick and fed up of so much medication, I never used to take a headache tablet now have around 14 tablets a day to take!! I'll get used to it all one day!
